The Stanford Stepper

About:
My name is Jason Wei and I’m currently a 4th year student at Stanford University. I’m studying Mathematics, Computer Science, and Financial Engineering, and I’m currently in Chicago, IL, working at DRW Holdings as a Trading Assistant intern.

I enjoy developing applications on the Android platform in my free time, and I’m also interested in bridging the gap between technology/computer science and other various fields – particularly health and medicine!

Proposal for a Solution:

As the API is not given to the development team until after registration, I’m not entirely sure what is possible in the SOAP-API given by Practice Fusion, however from what I can glean from the challenge site I’d like to:

Create a mobile application (initially on the Android platform) that:

1) Allow users to quickly report latest bio-metric data (i.e. blood glucose levels for people with Diabetes, number of hours slept for people with sleep disabilities, etc) which gets stored in the Practice Fusion database

2) Use Android’s notifications to send push notifications to medical provider phones when certain patients have updated their data (i.e. patient reports latest blood glucose level, and if medical provider is “tracking” that patient, then medical provider will receive a notification)

3) Use Android’s notifications to send push notifiactions to patients when their medical providers have information/instructions/reminders for them

4) Integrate Android’s native Google calendar into the application to allow users to quickly add reminders/appointments to their “cloud” calendars (i.e. when to get a blood test, when to visit the health specialist, etc)

5) Use Google’s Graph API to provide real time updated graphs and other analytics for both users and medical providers

Other things that are possible are integration with Facebook Connect, as well as geo-tagging by taking advantage of Android’s GPS system (both location awareness and social media were mentioned in the “Bonus Points” section of the challenge overview). However I personally see less value in integrating these “cutting-edge” technologies, but again can if Practice Fusion thinks it is desirable.

Again, these are just my initial thoughts which I know I am capable of creating. But again, some of these points that I listed may change once I know the full capabilities of the API provided by Practice Fusion.

Thanks!
