For the 1 in 3 Americans who suffer with high blood pressure, taking an active role in managing their own health could mean healthier, longer lives. The mission is to create an interactive solution that would motivate and empower people to proactively manage their health. Through easy access and organization of their personal health information, relevant content, and social support, we hope to change the way patients think about their health, and make better-informed decisions for healthier lives.

Challenge Description

Create an interactive solution which enables patients to better manage their cardiovascular health through a customizable, user-friendly interface. The solution should be holistic and help organize and provide easy access to personalized health information, relevant public data, and aggregated content (ie education, treatment, diet, exercise and social network).  The goal is to empower patients to easily and effectively manage their cardiovascular health.

Phase 1:
Entrants are required to submit a 5 minute video demonstrating the solution's capabilities and functionality, and a PowerPoint presentation (30 slides maximum) describing the solution. Entries should meet all the requirements detailed in the "Submission Criteria" section below. Teams will receive instructions on how to submit their entries after registering.

Phase 2:
4 phase 1 winners will be selected to further develop their submissions. Phase 2 will culminate in a live demo day session occurring in January 2012.

Areas for Consideration:

  • Health support systems (community/family engagement)
  • Making health education engaging to encourage learning
  • Incorporating risk profiling tools to promote positive behavior/lifestyle changes
  • Sharing information with appropriate Healthcare stakeholders
  • Leverage existing publically available data sources (ie Healthdata.gov, etc)

Evaluation Criteria

Key evaluation for judging may include any or all of the following:

  • Innovation/creativity
  • Scalability
  • Design and usability/interactivity
  • Broad appeal/potential impact
  • Ability to organize users’ data
  • Ease of integration with other systems, ie. EMR/EHR

Additional criteria not included in the list above may be taken into consideration during the judging process.

The judging criteria are to be applied in the sole discretion of Sponsor and the individual judges.  By participating in the Challenge, each entrant into the Challenge acknowledges and agrees that such evaluations may differ from person to person and agrees to be bound by and not challenge the final decisions of Sponsor and the individual judges.

Submission Criteria

  • Preference is for solutions that work across multiple platforms (ie: Web-based, mobile, tablet, etc)
  • Solution should support modern versions of Windows and Mac OS desktop browsers as well as older versions still prevalent in the marketplace but should not use HTML5 or CSS3 for the submitted prototype (these should be addressed as scale-up considerations)
  • Solution should support modern versions of iOS and Android mobile browsers
  • Architecture should be easily scalable and simple to deploy
  • Solution should support conformance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 (http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/)
    • Explicit level of support to be defined by Novartis
    • Mobile experience should leverage mobile web technologies and/or native smart phone applications (iOS, Android) but not HTML5 or CSS3 for the submitted prototype (these should be addressed as scale-up considerations)
    • Solution should include a metrics and tracking methodology
    • The solution should be able to securely store and transmit patient-identifiable data and should therefore be HIPAA-compliant
    • The solution provider should propose how the solution can be "operationalized" (deployment, version controlled, incident and problem management, documented) during a prototyping, piloting and scaling.

Optional requirements:

  • Leverage integration with popular social APIs (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • Leverage RSS or other external, third-party data feeds/APIs
  • A registration button and related link for the challenge can be found at the top of the right hand column of this page. Teams are asked to register to help Health 2.0 and the challenge sponsor anticipate resources needed to manage the project.

  • There are no additional forms or steps required after submission of the registration form. Instructions on how to submit an entry will be sent prior to the close of the submission deadline.
